It's a shame what is considered as 'great' photography on DA nowadays. Today I looked through DA's most popular photographs in the last 24 hours and I was ashamed and sorely disappointed to what I found. Now I know art is subjective and every piece of artwork contains beauty in some sense so before I go on I want that opinion to be considered. So basically my question is since when is a piece of paper with lyrics or quotes written on it considered 'great photography'? Since when is taking a picture of yourself in a bra because you have big breasts considered an 'outstanding picture' (I'm pointing the finger at all you pervy deviants out there

). I've also realised an increase in people taking pictures of anything and I mean
ANYTHING and then editing it on paint by putting little chibi expressions on it (I've dabbled in this in the past but in a different manner and normally with some comical concept behind it and I certainly do not consider those pictures brilliant photography). These things require absolutely NO skill! In the past I've seen photographers become very famous on DA with this and sometimes I wonder how they've gotten so famous. I probably wouldn't care as much but then when I go on the newest submitted photographs and I see these breathtaking photos taken by highly skilled photographers who have real raw passion for the subject and they have gotten no recognition for their work it really does sadden me.
Maybe I'm being naive, thinking great art is about the actual form and beauty the work possesses. Maybe truly great art is appealing to the audience but I always thought we, as an art appreciating society, didn't particularly accept sell-outs? As I said, art is subjective and just because I don't accept this as art worthy does not mean others don't actually believe that these images aren't wonderful.
Then again, true artists don't care whether they get appreciated or popular for their work. They do it simply because they know no other way but to express their opinions, attitudes and beliefs through their art despite if the audience will sing it praise. And these people who submit their art may think the same way as me and out of luck they become popular and go with it (who can blame them?). I would just like to see these undiscovered photographers (and other artists) get more appreciation for their inspiring work.
(P.S, I do realise my work is not of such a high standard that I am really able to criticise as harshly as I have. Nevertheless it won't stop me expressing my opinion

)
